Transcreation

Transcreation is a blend of translation and creative writing. Unlike standard translation, which aims to convey the same meaning in another language, transcreation recreates the emotional impact, tone, and cultural resonance of the original content.

Transcreation is most common in marketing campaigns, advertising slogans, product names, and brand taglines — contexts where the literal meaning matters less than the feeling the content evokes. A car slogan like "Feel the Road" might translate literally into German but land flat; a transcreation would find a German phrase that carries the same visceral excitement.

The process typically involves a brief that describes the intent, emotional tone, and audience of the original. The transcreator then proposes multiple options (called "concepts"), each with a back-translation and rationale so the client can evaluate the choices.

Key concepts

  • Preserves emotional tone and cultural resonance, not just literal meaning
  • Used for slogans, taglines, advertising copy, and brand content
  • Transcreators submit multiple concept options with rationale — not a single translation
